Incident that changed my life
One evening Nidhi, a friend, told me about 'Meals on Wheels' held in Pune. This initiative was taken up by Ms. Coelho with few of her friends and family. They choose one day every week and share food with the needy on streets. Neither an NGO nor a government body, it started off as an idea to do whatever could be done for people who are not privileged to have a proper meal even once in a week. Eventually, 'Meals on Wheels' gained popularity through a 'Logical Indian' video by the same title and apparently, that is how Nidhi learnt about it. This appeared as a great idea and I decided to join her. On we went the next Saturday to Vineet's place, an integral part of this initiative. Reaching there, I received a warm welcome from all enthusiasts and we started preparing the menu; puris and curry.
Once done cooking, we set out on streets to share our food. Just then, we spotted an old man around the corner arranging his belongings in a sack. I noticed his shirt had two large holes and dhoti had dirt. The pale eyes were surrounded by stubborn wrinkles and the skin was sticking on as if it had lost all it's strength but still willing to do it's best to cover the shrunken body. I watched from far while Vineet approached him politely and offered him food. He looked quizzical. When we explained we want to share our food, he smiled and raised three fingers indicating three puris. When we offered to have more, he said something I had never expected that has struck with me till date! He said "There are many others like me on the streets. Please give them the rest. This is sufficient for me." His voice was honest and responsible. I could not believe my ears. So many of us at many times lose hope and act irresponsibly blaming life has not been fair. This man who spent his life on streets must have endured situations unimaginable to me, but, he did not let his soul turn sour. Standing there with food, I realised I'm not being great by offering, rather, he who accepts the help is greater.
No matter how hard life hits you, you ought to get back up strongly and humbly. That night, the man with torn shirt taught me to appreciate two human traits: resilience and gratitude.
Much love,
