Roots
Today evening, a group of people I know in office and I were having a discussion about the current hot topic - Karnataka elections. One of them particularly had harsh comments about everyone and everything. According to him, our countrymen are horrible and the Government is worst. I even heard him say he doesn’t want to stay in India because he thinks this country is useless. He is someone who loves his home, has never ever travelled more than 500 kms from his city, let alone visited abroad to any other country. Listening to him, I couldn’t help but wonder, how many of us have had confident assumptions about things we know nothing about? Worse, we even voice those stupid opinions without realising that unless we try it out properly, we are not eligible to comment anything. This is not just about him, rather, about everyone who insulted their motherland.
In few terms of official work, I may agree with him for the roads not constructed, few promises not kept, illiteracy or for every farmer who hanged himself. May be whoever is in power has not done his/her part completely, but, have you? Have you been what is expected of a citizen? It is very easy to blame someone else for all the things gone wrong. Ask yourself, in all these years you have lived, what have you done constructively for your nation? If you have, there is nothing more noble. If not, least we could do is not belittling our land.
Let’s explore the world not forgetting our birth place. Let’s be respectful of every culture not forgetting our own. I don’t know if my colleague will still hold the same opinion when he actually travels. I wish him all the success when he does, at the same time, the Indian in me wishes he realises the importance of his country and country men. Next time when you are in a discussion and someone insults your motherland, stand up for her, for, she deserve it.
Respect your roots,
Prerana
