The Red Light

In the fantastic movie ‘The Great Debaters’, a line spoken in one of the debates echoed in my mind when I thought of writing about this topic - “you cannot choose which rules to follow and which not to. If I had choice, I’d never stop at the red light.” That’s exactly how I feel every time I’m one among the herd, waiting for the red light to turn green and we see a bunch of motorbikes breaking the rule. When I look at them, they seem quite well-dressed, probably might even hold a good job. What I really cannot fathom is that being educated, why do they need a policeman to follow traffic rules. Ride on road, stop when the light is red, wait until it turns green and then continue. Simple. Everyone is obliged to follow this, if not, it will lead to chaos and traffic, resulting in few cases, accidents! There was an entire episode on this on ‘Satyamev Jayate.’

That’s where we need to change ourselves. We blame the government, municipalities, other citizens, but, overlook ourselves when we do not follow as simple thing as this. How can the country change for better if its citizens do not even follow traffic rules!  Every big milestone was once a small step. Let’s take that step and promise to sincerely follow traffic rules from now on. Furthermore, let’s be respectful of other people and do not unnecessarily horn.
Remember, little things matter.

With lots of love,
Prerana
