Best Friends, Best Rivals

I was supremely excited when my library mam, in high school, asked us to do a scrap book about anything we really loved. I knew exactly what my scrap book would be about; Roger Federer. Ha! I simply love that guy. I couldn’t wait to show my craft to the entire classroom. Tennis was introduced to me by my sister who admired Pete Sampras. During that time, Federer had just begun his career. Over the years, his determination with the raquet, attitude on the court and down-to-earth nature grew over me like no other. By the time the Swiss player had won his first grand slam (2003 Wimbledon), I was completely mesmerised.
We, Roger Federer’s fans, have a world of our own. We are a separate race, united by the game of this extraordinary athlete. Interestingly, time-and-again, we come across another racial fans who worship an equally talented Spaniard. We share several common traits. For instance, they are ferocious like us, support their player with similar vigor and respect the other race, just like us. The tennis courts know that world has never been looking forward to any other two players playing against each other the way it did for Federer and Nadal. Both with equal calibre and sportsmanship spirit, they showed the world what it’s like to be true rivals when the game is on.
And, we were all on top of the world when the two best players came together for Laver Cup last year. An occasion no less than a festival, both admirers rejoiced at every moment of the game. The humour they lit up during matches, the way they backed each other up during the entire tournament clearly demonstrates their bond and mutual respect. They are truly what I look upto whenever I need reassurance of how two people should compete against each other in true spirit.
Having said all this, I would choose Federer over anybody, anyday!

With true spirit,
Prerana
